Week 7 Research Video Planning & Ted Talk Reflections

Part One
Replicant Collective is doing great with planning and working on the video project as we have been functioning efficiently as a team since the start of the program. The team has met up a few times during this week to discuss the specifications of our Final Research video project. We were able to split up the desired portions of our presentation to have each members speak through 2 minutes worth of content about bio-mimicry for our long 8-10minute presentation and during this week we will work on the simple version. We are collaborating through discord as a way to speak to each other and utilizing google documents to write down the information needed for all of us to understand the subject matter being spoken about. The tools I will be using to produce my part of the presentation is recording my audio through Audacity or OBS and provide the audio for Austin to edit the video. I believe Austin will be editing the video through Adobe Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro. Our next meeting will be on Thursday this week to finalize all of our sections and provide each other with feedback for our parts. The process was very smooth, and something that I would love to do differently next time in a large collaborative project is to communicate frequently and establish a stronger time dedication. Overall our group is doing great and I am excited to work well with them in future endeavors.

Part Two

A Ted talk I chose to explore was the "How to Make Learning as Addictive as Social Media". This video explored how language applications like Duolingo utilizes psychological techniques from social media and mobile games to make it more engaging and addictive. The video was interesting because it delved into how we can utilize game features to apply into educational backgrounds and tools. Duolingo utilizes specific functions such as gamification, streaks and notifications that keep the users heavily engaged with what they are learning. In a sense it is employing behavioral psychology because of the way it provides rewards and drives competition. By applying these mechanics to high education and academics it would provide a large boost in motivation and retention for learning materials. I think I agree with his sentiments on having these strategies apply to academics, as I believe having more engaging activities would make learning fun and enjoyable.

The presentation Life After Death by PowerPoint was a fun and engaging video about how people have employed their PowerPoint presentations. I enjoyed when he pointed out how much people add irrelevant details to their presentations which eventually confuses and overwhelms their audience. In addition the over the top sections where he demonstrates the visual clarity of animation and its effectiveness. My favorite part about this video is the emphasis on the acronyms people use and his satirical versions of different graphs and charts. Not only was this a highly informational presentation as it dove into the outrageous sides of PowerPoint presentations, but it was extremely funny.

The visual aid and props article provided a short list of how we can make our presentations more appealing and engaging with the audience. I personally believe that the use of visual aid is important because it allows the audience to become more interested in the topic and provides context to the presentation. Something I will take note from this list is the use of physical object and props when speaking in-person.

Overall this week has been going by quick and I have learned a lot about how to present and research for the video topic. I never knew I would learn the essential applications of Biomimicry. Hoping our final video project comes out great and we have a successful final week here in CST 300.
